Re: is pilotmgr still being worked on?

I'm running Linux, and I have none of the problems either of you
mention. I run PilotManager at least twice a day.

The "official" distributions of PilotManager *did* require some
tweaking to get them working on my machine. It helps tremendously to
install the /perl subdirectory of the pilot-link utilities before
trying to build PilotManager.

I disagree that maintaining perl and tk are problematic. Try
"perl -MCPAN -e shell", which has worked for me for a long time.

I have TWO working copies of PilotManager on my linux i386 system; one
is my original hand-installed copy from the distribution, the other is
from now-frozen Debian 2.1 packages. On the other hand, I've *never*
gotten PilotManager to work on my Sparc/Linux system, which runs
RedHat 5.2. I've used Linux since 0.99 kernels. I've used slackware, redhat,
debian, and suse distributions. In general, RPM-based distributions have
proven difficult to maintain, and I've had very little success with
locally built tools on these systems. Over against this is my
experience with Debian, which just plain works for me.

I'm not trying to start a distribution war, but by and large when
someone starts complaining that a given tool 'doesn't work under
Linux', my experience has been that it comes down to some
RedHat-specific quirk of their environment. It might help if someone
with PilotManager working on a RedHat system could put together an
RPM. (I'll certainly try, if I ever get it running on my Sparc/Linux
system).

Steve doesn't mention what his specific problem is, so I can't help
him. I do use SyncPlan, so I can comment on Dan's message; in the
past, the problems I've had with SyncPlan were actually related to
netplan and permissions. A good start at debugging these is to set up
your plan as a netplan client, rather than local access, and run
'/path/to/netplan -v -d', which will show details of the client/server
dialog. Once you have netplan running this way, try running syncplan.

The only other plan-related problem I have had is when SyncPlan
wouldn't load because /usr/lib/perl5/MD5.pm was on a bad sector...
