I believe one of the issues with the "modification of ..." error messge has to
do with attempting to sync to a different palm device, which doesn't contain the
same user name and user ID as the previous unit.
So, you need to make sure your new palm gets the same user namd and ID as the
previous one. If you've already been sync'ing your previous unit with another
desktop (i.e. using a different syncing mechanism than pilotmgr), you're in
luck. All you have to do is sync with that other machine first. It will load
the correct user name and ID onto your pilot, after which pilotmgr seems happy.
I just did this, and upgraded from a III to a Vx with no problems.
If you haven't beeen syncing with another desktop, I'm not sure what to do. I
don't believe entering the same user name is sufficient; the user ID (a
seven-digit number) must also match. There's a fairly well-known, albeit
officially undocumented graffiti shortcut which shows your name and ID
(<shortcut symbol>.4), but I don't know how to program that info into a new
unit. Anyone else know?
Art, in your particular case, I think the issue might be that you first tried to
sync with pilotmgr. Try this: do a hard reset, then sync with your home PC,
then try syncing with pilotmgr.

need some help. My old PalmPilot died recently, so I bought a Palm Vx as a
replacement. But I have not be able to get Pilotmgr to talk to it.
