Did this not come down to permissions on the tty port that you are using.  I seem to remember somebody talking about permissions on:

/dev/tty (which points to /devices/pseudo/sy@0:tty)

being owned by root, and read only to other.  My device is read, write to everybody, so we can use it, but if it is not writable by you, you can't write to it...
