[PilotMgr] Problems w/ MALsync.pm

Platform: Ultra5
OS: Solaris 8 Beta_Refresh

I'm trying to make AvantGo/MALsync work with PilotManager (Great PGM BTW!!!)
I find that the docs for the malsync conduit are rather sparse...
the 'malsync' command line pgm works just fine, but I get:
  Error Can't locate auto/PDA/Pilot/connect.al in @INC at MALSync.pm line 139
Using the docs, it recommends checking to see if things were patched...
and in fact they claim NOT to be patched.  I've run and rerun the patch
routines without errors... I even used the pre-patched distribution 
from http://slug.arlut.utexas.edu/~jbaughmn/pilotmgr ...
Of note is that the steps in "Perl5" dont work for me as advertised.
I am using the /usr/perl5 distributed w/ Sol8, but GCC which I pulled
off SunFreeware.com .  I've run numerous "find" commands and there 
is no 'connect.al' on my workstation as best I can tell.  Ideas?
