Searching for Installation tool assistant

I have occasionally noticed references in software recommending that you
remove previous versions of software before installing new versions.

Has anyone developed any tools that aid in this?  For instance, does the
Conduit that comes in Pilot Manager remove older versions of databases or
applications before installing new ones?
