[PilotMgr] problems with APPINFO in new conduit

I'm developing a new conduit between the pilot and todo-mode.el for
emacs.  I'm using SyncToDo.pm from Derek Pizzagoni as a template.  I
have everything working pretty much the way I want.  The only
exception is that when I try to update the category list on the pilot
junk is getting stored.  I can use the appinfoHook to dump out what my
readFile function is setting up.  It looks clean there, just trashed
on the palm itself.  As an added bonus, when writeFile is called the
ungarbled categories are written back out with no problems.

If you can look at my code and tell me what I'm doing wrong I would be
