for a couple of times I've done it this way:

with the old PalmIII:

mkdir Last-PalmIII-Backup
pilot-xfer -b  Last-PalmIII-Backup
install-user /dev/ttya
	[here you get some Info about your Palm. Essential is:
.....
Pilot user Larry W. Virden
UserID 08154711
....]

with the new PalmVx:

install-user /dev/ttya "Larry W. Virden" 08154711
pilot-xfer -r  Last-PalmIII-Backup


That's all.
This did a great job for me and some of my colleagues, who had trouble
withe the "Modification od a read only value ..." thing.

I didn't experience trouble with "crufty libraries" or the like.
However, some Hacks might no longer work (of course) or no longer be
needed.
