[PilotMgr] Can't sync to Palm M100

Problem: Can't sync from Ultra 1 to Palm M100
Error Message: Unable to connect to the Pilot.  Sync aborted.

I have installed the software as instructed.  Checked the serial configuration 
as suggested.  The only thing that was different was the permissions on 
/dev/ttya and /dev/ttyb - the group permission is set to root instead of sys.  

I am logged in remotely to my workstation.  Not sure if that matters.

Any suggestions?
