[PilotMgr] error: modification of a read-only ... line 2665

We recently replaced a couple of III's for Vx's.  We made sure the
.pilotmgr directories were backed up first.  Then we replaced the
cradles then used PilotMgr to Install the LatestBackup contents by
selecting Installer -> Configure -> Add -> navigate to the
LatestArchive directory and "Accept All" from the navigation window.
Then selecting Installer -> Run... and following the PilotMgr screen
prompt to press the Sync Button on the cradle.

Then synched normally and everything has been peachy.

The IIIc's, though, have been a b-t-h.

I'm running into the same problem reported by others on the upgrade issue 
and need some help.  My old PalmPilot died recently, so I bought a Palm Vx 
as a replacement.  But I have not be able to get Pilotmgr to talk to it.  

When people talk about the fix of using the Install conduit to load a new 
ap, are you using the PilotManager File->Installer menu, or are you using 
another technique?

I have gone through the following sequence, but none have fixed the problem:

-first tried syncing with pilotmgr.  Got the "modification of .." error 
message
-sync'ed the Palm Vx on my home PC.  Everything worked fine.
-tried syncing with pilotmgr, got the "modification of .." error message
-using my home PC, upgraded the Palm Vx OS from 3.5.0 to 3.5.2
-tried syncing with pilotmgr, got the "modification of .." error message
-tried using the PilotManager File->Installer menu to install a file on the 
Pilot.  Again got the same  "modification of .." error message

The version of perl installed on our shared file system is perl,V5.003
