First time Sync on a Vx (PalmOS v3.5)

We've just acquired a swag of Palm Vx's for the Sun staff in the
office.  Without exception there's been a problem with syncing for the
first time with Pilot Manager.

PM fails reporting an attempt to write to a read-only area error at
line 2662.

After trolling the archives it seems we are not alone.  The two
solutions we uncovered were to;

upgrade Perl/Tkl to the latest version...... it's already up_to_date,

or

to sync for the first time on a PC....  which worked for most of the
devices, excepting two.

Are you aware of a definitive cause of this problem, and is there a
known work-around for it that may help us to sync up the last two
units?
