Sorry to reply to my own posting.

But, I have to say myself: RTFM!
Usage: /usr/bin/pilot-manager [-rcdir <dir>]
        [-sync | -daemon | -syncwith <conduits..> | -install <dbs..>]
 -sync = Start sync from command line, don't bring up gui.
 -daemon = Daemon mode, sync forever in background (preferences are
locked).

That was almost too simple.
