I've got the same thing: I'm running SuSE linux 6.1. and pilotmgr 1.107.
I've noticed that when booting, a script (/sbin/init.d/rcx.d/serial,
x=1,2,3) was running and "doing something" to my serial port /dev/ttyS0
to which my craddled is plugged.
when I typed "setserial /dev/ttyS0" it replied "UART: unknown, Port:
0x2f8, IRQ:3". then pilotmanager did what you explain.
invoquing (as root) setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart 16550A put everything in
order.
What I finally did is to compile my kernel with the "dumb" serial option
and then delete the serial script in rcx.d, x=1,2,3.
Ever since everything is OK.
sincerely yours,
