I know of two Apps that might be relevant. First is UnDupe. Check out
http://www.stevenscreek.com/pilot/undupe.shtml. This is crippleware; it'll
detect dupes without registering, but to remove them, you must register (costs
$4.95).
Another useful cleanup app is dbscan, which is part of datebk3, but can be
downloaded separately, and is freeware:
