Ah, that explains a lot.  So the first time around, SyncCM
notices that you calendar has changed dramatically, but then
even if you cancel it records the new size so you don't get the
warning the next time (that's a bug).

Instead of purging appointments off of the Pilot, you might want
to go to SyncCM and adjust the sync range.  If you do that, SyncCM
will effectively purge old appointments from your Pilot but will
not trash them from SyncCM.  I think there's a way to have SyncCM
use relative date ranges so that it only keeps appointments within
the past month on your Pilot...Alan?
