I tried doing that about 100 times, no go. I've also hard reset the
pilot 3 or 4 times and repeated the pilotmgr sync attack with no
success. I'm tempted to think it's a hardware problem on the pilot,
but 'pilot-xfer -p /dev/ttyS3 -l' outputs a curious message:

Unable to bind to port '/dev/ttyS3'.
(Please see 'man pilot-xfer' or 'pilot-xfer --help' for information on setting the port).

This message gets spit out when I'm a normal user or when run as
root. Anybody know what it means? 'pilot-xfer --help' doesn't mention
error messages. I don't believe it's the port hardware or the setup as
I've had a serial mouse working with gpm as a test.

The perms on the relevant /dev files are:

lrwxrwxrwx   1 root     pilot           5 Jan 15 04:00 /dev/pilot -> ttyS3
crw-rw----   1 root     pilot      4,  67 Jul 20  1998 /dev/ttyS3

my normal user account is a member of group pilot as well.

This is driving me nuts, it all worked a month or so ago. I've left
the batteries out of my pilot overnight and will try again tomorrow,
if not, it's time to install M$ Windows and attempt a sync then. If
anybody has any suggestions or help I'd much appreciate it as
installing Windows just to sync my pilot makes my computer unhappy.
