I installed the debian packages and pilot-manager worked. Here is some
of the info on the packages I used:

freefall ~ $ dpkg -s pilot-link pilot-manager perl libc6 |egrep "Package|Version"
Package: pilot-link
Version: 0.8.11-1
Package: pilot-manager
Version: 1.106-1
Package: perl
Version: 5.004.04-6
Package: libc6
Version: 2.0.7u-7.1

It's been a while since I installed things, so I may not have the latest
releases. I've installed the Backup, SyncPlan, and Installer conduits.
