Mark, in my case the "wierd packets" problem was apparently due to a glitch in
the software for the workstation port. I took the Unix novice approach to cure
the problem. Exit all applications. Power down my workstation, then power it
back up. This corrected the problem.
I had similar symptoms to you; Pilot could talk to my PC, but got the "wierd
packets" message when I tried to sync to my workstation.
