Thanks for all your responses regarding my Pilot battery problem.
Several individuals have pointed out that this is likely
a hardware problem with the capacitor that preserves the
contents of memory during battery swaps.
I called 3Com, and a friendly service representative told
me that this is not an uncommon problem on older Pilots,
and advised me to change the batteries *one at a time*.
Others on this alias suggested that I check the pins in the memory
card slot to verify that they are not bent (I recently installed a
2MB upgrade).
I'll try both of these fixes out tonight.
