The initial pilot-desktop handshake is allways done at 9600 baud. If the
desktop is set to use a different rate it is at this time that the
desktop tells the pilot to change rates. If for some reason the baud
rate on the desktop serial port cannot be changed then communication
will fail.
The last message will be 'retrieving user information' because that is
what is going on at that time.
Next time it happens try setting the desktop baud rate to 9600, so no
rate switch will be attempted.
