Re: [PilotMgr] Status of PilotManager and Conduits
I'm cc'ing this to Linux Weekly News, whose Desktop Editor has been
snubbing PilotManager for a while, in the (possibly vain) hopes that
this will provide some enlightenment, and result in more balanced
coverage of PilotManager in future.

PilotManager is _a_ way to go -- there are alternatives, but not
everybody is switching. (I switched to jpilot, but then switched
back.) It depends on what you want. Here's some alternatives:
Jpilot: nice standalone GTK+-based app, includes bundled editor, so
it's very simple to use. However, it doesn't include any plugins (or
any obvious way to make plugins) for external apps like netplan or
bbdb. You get four conduits for the four main apps (Memo, AddrBk,
Date, Todo) that come with PalmOS, and that's it. No email even! Too
limiting for me. http://jpilot.linuxbox.com
Gnome-pilot: works best with the Gnome desktop. Will sync with
gnome-pim apps (gnomecal and gnomecard). Does seem to have support
for third-party or homegrown plugins, but it seems to be non-trivial
to add your own. http://www.gnome.org
Kpilot: seems to require the use of the K Desktop Environment (KDE).
I think it's mostly equivalent to gnome-pilot, but I'm not sure, since
I don't use KDE. http://www.kde.org
Overall, I think PilotManager is the most powerful and flexible. The
others offer better ease-of-use and/or integration with existing
desktops, but seriously limit what you can do with your Palm system.
PilotManager is old, and its age shows sometimes, but like Emacs,
another of my favorites, it offers great rewards to those willing to
delve beneath the surface.
(Side note to LWN desktop editor: you also overlooked Netplan[1] in
your calendaring apps overview. If you'd looked closer at
PilotManager in the first place, you would have inevitably discovered
Netplan when checking out the SyncPlan conduit. So double shame on
you.)
cheers
