Re: [PilotMgr] error: modification of a read-only ... line 2665

I'm not sure changing the user name is sufficient. As I alluded to in my
earlier message, I remember reading somewhere that the syncing tools look both
at your user name, and you user ID (a generated number) to decide whether the
device is in fact the same one it had syncced to previously.

Searching through the pilotmgr archives, I found that you can in fact set both
your user name and user ID using the "install-user" pilot-link tool. Given
this, perhaps the following procedure would help some of you:

- Using the undocumented graffiti shortcut (<script l>..4), get your user name
and user ID off your old device.
- Use the install-user pilot-link tool to copy this info to your new palm:
  % install-user /dev/pilot MyName <MyID#>
...substituting the actual path to your serial device for "/dev/pilot"

I also found these other potentially helpful hints buried in the archives (sorry
about new preserving references):

"Another work-around we've discovered that solved the problem with the
outstanding Palm was to use the Install conduit to load a new app -
after which the synch process ran just fine......."

"I have determined that it's failing ONLY when the database is in Flash at which
time Pilot Manager complains and finishes syncing). Anybody have Pilot Manager
working with JackFlash (or by some other method have put stuff in Flash)?" (The
inference is to move any databases you might have put into flash back out -Eric)

"I got this same error when I moved databases to flash memory. Perl would come
up with this error. It went away when I upgraded to Perl 5.005_03 and
Tk800.018. Are you running the latest of Perl and/or Tk?"
