John,
I just went through this, not a lost Palm but an upgrade.
There have been two suggestions on this alias over the past months:
1) Upgrade your perl and perl/tk
2) Sync on a PC first
Well, yesterday I did start by syncing my new IIIc on my home PC but when I
brought it into work, I got the same error you're seeing. Upgrading perl didn't
seem practical for me, since I'm using perl via a shared server and I wasn't
ready to take on having my own copy.
So, I thought that maybe it would help to sync *first* with PilotMgr, so I did a
hard reset and tried that. Didn't work. Of course, now I had an empty IIIc
that is pretty much useless.
So, I went home and re-sync'ed again with the PC (actually, it took several
syncs, but that is another, longer story). I also ran the memory test (there
was an item here recently about some defective memory in new palms) -- passed.
In the course of doing that, I disovered there is a Palm OS 3.5.2 update, which
I installed.
Today, after re-syncing and installing 3.5.2, I can sync w/PilotMgr just like
the old days, and life looks better again.
Bottom line -- I don't know if it was the multiple syncs, or 3.5.2, but it
worked for me today.
