No, it's not.  What works is "hitting the button makes the HotSync 
processing work".  I own a Palm; I use it on Windows.  I know of
no way to initiate the HotSync from the Windows desktop.
If you do, I'd like to know about it.

And PilotManager *does* run as a daemon if you want it to.
Try pilotmanager -?.
