I might be wrong, but this sounds like a feature I've seen with Tcl/Tk

Solaris doesn't always install certain font packages. If the ToDo client
uses some of the TCL/Tk extensions, the name of which escapes me, I believe
these use the additional fonts, hence why you would get the small blank window
(in top left corner?)

Try seeing whether you have these installed, if not, dig out your Solaris CD
and install

  1  SUNWxwcft     X Windows common (not required) fonts
                   (sparc) 3.5.27,REV=0.96.03.25
  2  SUNWxwfnt     X Windows platform required fonts
                   (sparc) 3.5.27,REV=0.96.03.25
  3  SUNWxwoft     X Windows optional fonts
                   (sparc) 3.5.27,REV=0.96.03.25
