After install PM v1.106+ runs but won't sync

I've installed all the files.  Looks normal (did this on another
workstation and it worked fine -- that was an Ultra; this is a
SS5).  But then when I run the sync program with everything plugged
in, nothing happens.

I get 

Please press the Hotsync button on your Pilot cradle

on PilotManager.

and 

Connecting with the desktop on my Pilot

but then nothing happens.  It times out.

Help?
