Larry,

If you are using an older Ultra1 or other older Sun box,
then your problem may be that your port speed is too high.
I have not been able to get my Ultra 1 serial port to 
reliably connect to the Palm 3 any faster than  38,400.
The newer machines, Ultra 60, etc, have better abilities,
and can sych much faster.  Not so with the older design.
The serial port is not set up to handle the higher speeds,
and will drop data.
