ah, different problem.
the problem wasn't the pilot shutting down for inactivity, it was that
the pilot would stop the sync (for unknown reasons) before SyncPlan
was finished. SyncPlan would continue to spew output for at least
a minute before it finally hung and had to be killed.
fwiw, it's a IIIx :-)
