I'm not sure that this will work, but it might. If you put 00 in for the
phone number then it doesn't dial anything.  I'm pretty sure that it also
doesn't send any init strings.  You should be about to get it to send
whatever is needed for your modem by making it part of the login script.
I don't know if you can put anything in for the init string is this case
or not.  Hope this helps.  I've used the 00 to connect to a terminal
server directly and run ppp without a modem at all.
