I don't know the answer to your busy serial port, but I've been using 38400 with 
my sparc ultra 2. PCs can go much faster, older sparcs might need to go slower, 
depending on the model. Old sparc serial ports were real slow from what I've 
heard.
You can just keep bumping up the speed until it no longer makes the connection. 
That's how I determined my max speed.
