Ouch. Lots of nasty stuff.
I have four comments.
1. Yes, I am still here. I don't have much time these days to work on
pilotmgr, but I still support it as best I can.
2. I've heard from many of Linux users who have gotten pilotmgr to work.
I've also heard from lots with minor problems we were able to work
around (mainly the redhat 5.2 thing).
I have NOT heard from Linux users until now saying things like this:
> People! It's broken! I'm not the only one! It doesn't work. If it works
> under Solaris, then great. I'm under Linux. Lot's of us are.
and believe me, that doesn't help you gain any support!
Which brings me to point three.
3. I do not have or have access to Linux, I have never used Linux. However,
I have made some effort to provide Linux libraries on the pilotmgr web page.
If they don't work, why don't you tell me? Or better yet, offer your
help to get functioning libraries available for all users?
I put up the current linux libraries after minimal testing from a couple
users who said it worked. I can't do any testing myself to verify this.
I sent out email and put a message on the web page for linux users to test
the libs and got a very minimal response.
4. Please note the difference between the *required libraries* for using
PilotManager and *PilotManager itself*.
PilotManager is the Basic Package as distributed on the web page.
That's it! It is not platform specific in any way (ie there is no
"Linux version" of PilotManager and a "Sun version").
The rest of the files on the download page are precompiled libraries for
*your convenience* so you don't have to download and install those
modules yourself. If you have some problem on your system with these
precompiled libraries then you can always install them yourself.
Instructions for this are available in README.porting.
Thanks.

The Linux libraries available on the pilotmgr web page prior to 9/1/98 were
linked incorrectly and DID require you to install pilot-link separately.
The libraries up now should NOT require this.
If you know of any other "tweaks" that were required to get things working
please let me know.

Jim, you are taking your ability to compile and install a perl package
for granted! If you can suggest a less confusing layout for the page I'm
all ears, but there are *many, many* users who could not install any of
the required packages themselves.. for those users these precompiled libs
are their only option.
