Continued problems using pilotmgr and perl 5.005_53

I hope to have some time tomorrow to try my last attempt to resolve my
ongoing problems.  Since upgrading to the latest perl development version,
pilotmgr has refused to operate correctly.  I get dropped sync attempts,
pilotmgr never remembers it's config operations, it is unable to install
all conduits available, etc.

I suspect the next version of perl is going to have MAJOR compatibility
problems with pilotmgr.
