Pilot comm problem

The Problem,
    My boss has been using his Pilot for several months.  But yesterday
when he tried to resynch after not synching for some time, it just
immediately gives error messages.

In the "Synchronization Status" window it says "connection canceled by
Pilot" and in a terminal window is says "weird packet".

We restarted PilotManager but that did not help.
Checked calendar location.  Ok.

Any ideas on what to do?
