Well, part of it I will take the blame for... that CEperl5 package
that everyone is installing is my creation, and I didn't symlink perl5
to perl in the bin directory. Never even thought about it, actually.
The easy fix (for now) is for me to recreate the package. I've
updated the package anyway to include a huge percentage of the perl
modules from CPAN preinstalled... I have no idea if you guys are
installing the old version I made or the newer version of the CEperl5
package that I updated a month or so ago. However, I will go ahead
and rebuild the package anyway and make the symlink. Hell, I might as
well throw a few more modules in there while I'm at it. :)
That will solve the problem of the people who are installing the
package in order to get a robust perl package for pilot support.
There's a few things that should also be done though.
1) Everyone who's currently using perl from /opt/PERL/... (the CEperl5
package) could/should just go make a symlink in /opt/PERL/bin and
link perl5 to perl (there's "perl" and "perl5.00404" in there right
now).
2) Gary (me) will fix the CEperl package to do this in the future and
will publish a URL for the package (yes, I will make this package
available outside sun for you people not on SWAN. It's
sparc/solaris only, although it runs on 2.5.1 and greater).
3) People should always make sure they get the canonical package from
me, to make sure they get the latest and greatest. I support this
package UNOFFICIALLY, along with all the other tools that I make
available.
4) If you use any of my packages or any of the tools off of my own two
tool servers (/net/legba.corp and /net/suntools.corp) PLEASE
subscribe to my tools alias by going to:
http://legba.corp/cgi-bin/do_aliases
and subscribing to the "tools" alias. This is the alias that I use
to provide UNOFFICIAL support, announcements, etc. about stuff like
this.
5) We could/should probably get together and fix the distribution on
softdist as well. However, softdist politics being what they are,
this isn't always a viable solution, especially when rapid updates
and/or changes need to be made. I will continue to maintain
suntools.corp and am migrating things from legba.corp (which is my
workstation) to the suntools.corp server. The stuff on there can
get updated a little quicker than softdist since they have
thousands and thousands of people to support and it's their real
job, while I only support _hundreds_ and it's a labor of love (yep,
I don't get paid for it... *sigh*).
Thanks, everyone! And please make sure that feedback about this stuff
gets back to me so that I can continue to enhance the things that I
provide... I'm perfectly happy to do the infrastructure work while the
Pilotmgr people get all the (deservedly so) glory. However, I don't
know about problems like this unless somebody tells me!
