The solution for your problem has been around for several months.
Use MultiMail. http://www.actualsoft.com/
It eliminates the necessity for a desktop conduit of any kind. It syncs
directly with the IMAP server. If you want to sync it using your cradle
(instead of a modem), start up pppd on the serial port your cradle is on.
By the way, you might want to get on the Lucent internal Pilot support email
list if you're not already on it.
