halts at "Retrieving User Information"

When I try to do a sync with my Palm Pilot the process stops at the step 
"Retrieving User Information".  Any suggestions?

This is a new problem for me.  The software has been running properly for 
several months.

This problem first showed up after I had to do a hard shutdown in the middle of 
a sync operation.  I was trying to do a sycn at a time when my calendar was not 
available (server was down).  In that case, the software did run through the 
backup of everything else, but halted when trying to sync to my calendar.  My 
calendar server is now running.  But when I try to do a sync, it halts at the 
initial step, "Retrieving User Information".
