I see a couple of potential gains for the future in a Java port:

  - Greater buy-in/support from commercial Java suppliers. A Java version
could well benefit from ongoing commercially supported Java enhancement
efforts in the future. Remeber: Java has this interesting thing called
a "Bean". Just plug it in and use it (well, OK, I say that somewhat
    with tongue in cheeck :-)

  - Pluggable/configurable look and feel. So far as I know, there's no
real way to change the way the current Perl version looks and behaves
on the screen. While the Perl PilotManager does a decent job at what
it has implemented so far, I'd really love to see something that looks
and acts a lot more like the native Macintosh version I use at home.

I'm thinking more long-term in this case, but I could see where the Java
environment could potentially offer much more in the way of a fancier
graphics look and feel than Perl/Tk can at this point.

But perhaps I speak out of ignorance, not knowing what really IS possible
with Perl/Tk at this point...
