I don't know that a java port would function any better than the
perlTk system you have in place. Java does not exist on as many systems
as perl / perlTk nor is it as stable. The pilotmanager software is not
dependent upon CDE, only one of the conduits (which can be removed).
I think that perl is better suited for the conduits, as well.
We're dealing with databases, text and strings, which is where perl
excels and java falls behind, when writing conduits. Converting this
interface over to java would be a mistake (and would invalidate the
existing conduits).
